Tripwire Sales Funnel

A tripwire sales funnel starts with a low value product offer, or a free giveaway product. Once someone purchases the low value product, or accesses the free complimentary offer, they are automatically offered another product of larger value.

A tripwire sales funnel is a good idea for affiliate marketers for a number of reasons. Many affiliates promote single products and only receive a single commission. But they’re leaving a lot of money on the table when they do this.

A single product might make an affiliate a commission of $40 – for a $100 digital product, for example. However, with a tripwire sales funnel, the affiliate can “gear” their funnel with multiple products:

  1. An entry level product of $100 – gives the affiliate a $40 commission
  2. The tripwire sales funnel then offers another product of $500 -giving the affiliate a $200 commission per sale
  3. Then, the tripwire promotes another product, this time of $2500 value – this gives a commission of $1000

Often too, the high value product is offered at a discount rate within a certain time frame “window”. A “discount window” encourages people to purchase a product where they would otherwise postpone their decision. It gives the purchase of a product more urgency. If they wait, they lose the discount and will have to pay a larger price should they buy at a later date.

Scarcity too is often used to sell products further down the purchase hierarchy in a tripwire sales funnel. Much like a discount window, some offers are only shown to a customer once, often immediately after their initial purchase. They are offered to purchase an “up-sell” immediately after they buy. If they choose not to purchase right there and then, they lose the option to buy the up-sell. Or, they can purchase the item later but at a different price or with a subscription.
